Types of Patellofemoral Replacement Patients
Dr. Garcia does blog topics on “hot and new” topics in the community. See his monthly vlog videos below.
In this video, Dr. Grant H. Garcia, a patellofemoral surgeon, discusses preoperative planning and the key categories of patients who undergo patellofemoral (knee) replacement surgery:
- Chronic Dislocation Patients: Most commonly female patients who have a history of chronic knee dislocations. Dr. Garcia notes that these cases can be difficult because the patellas (kneecaps) are often highly deformed or very thin, increasing the risk of a fracture during surgery. Proper pre-operative planning and MRIs are crucial for these patients to assess bone thickness.
- Isolated Arthritis Patients: Patients who specifically suffer from isolated arthritis in the patellofemoral joint. While this can affect both males and females, it is still more commonly observed in females.
- High-Level Male Athletes: Typically male patients who are high-level athletes and have worn down the joint over time, though the rest of their knee remains in good condition.
He emphasizes the overall importance of understanding the specific anatomical measurements and unique challenges associated with each patient type before proceeding with the implant surgery.
