Nutrition Series Video 12: Immediate Post Op

This video from Dr. Grant H. Garcia outlines the essential nutritional guidelines for the initial post-operative phase, which typically covers the first seven days following surgery.

The primary objectives during this immediate recovery period are to minimize muscle breakdown, support the immune system, provide the necessary nutrients for tissue repair, and maintain proper hydration, which can be challenging due to a suppressed appetite.

To achieve this, the video highlights specific protein and nutrient targets:

  • Protein Intake: Requirements increase to 2 to 2.5 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. This should be spread across multiple smaller meals rather than a few large ones, aiming for about 30 to 40 grams of protein per feeding.
  • Leucine Requirements: This amino acid requirement rises to 2.5 to 3 grams per meal.

These higher targets are necessary because surgery puts the body into a healing state where muscle breakdown outpaces buildup, especially while immobilized. Meeting these nutritional needs is critical before starting aggressive rehabilitation, as physical therapy alone cannot fully compensate for a lack of proper nutrition.
