Dr. Garcia Introduction to OCDs
Dr. Garcia does blog topics on “hot and new” topics in the community. See his monthly vlog videos below.
This video features Dr. Grant Garcia, a cartilage surgeon from Orthopedic Specialists of Seattle, providing an introduction to Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCDs).
Here is a summary of the description and key points discussed in the video:
What is an OCD? An OCD occurs when a small piece of bone and cartilage becomes partially or completely separated from the rest of the joint. It is generally thought to be caused by a vascular issue affecting blood supply to the cartilage.
Who does it affect? While most commonly diagnosed in younger patients between the ages of 10 and 18 when growth plates are still open, it can be diagnosed in individuals up into their 50s and 60s.
Common Locations: It is most frequently found in the knee, followed by the elbow, and then the ankle.
Diagnosis and Symptoms: Patients can present with pain, but some are completely asymptomatic and discover the condition accidentally through X-rays or imaging.
Treatment: In extreme cases where the bone and cartilage fragment breaks off and floats in the knee, prompt surgery is required. However, for many patients, the initial goal is to hold off on surgical intervention.
