Second look after lateral meniscus transplant

Dr. Garcia specializes in complex knee, shoulder and elbow sports surgeries. He has prepared a number of surgical videos below to help patients better understand their procedures. He is frequently updating his surgical video database so check back soon for further updates.

Second look after lateral meniscus transplant

This video, titled "Second look after lateral meniscus transplant," shows a brief diagnostic arthroscopy evaluating a previous lateral meniscus transplant performed with a bone slot technique.

The patient was experiencing a clicking sensation in the front (anterior) part of the knee, prompting the surgeon to go back in with a camera to check the integrity of the donor tissue.

The visual findings from this "second look" procedure include:

  • Full Integration: The donor meniscus graft is completely intact and fully integrated into the surrounding joint capsule. The surgeon notes that it has healed so seamlessly that it is difficult to even tell it is a transplant rather than native tissue.
  • Synovialization of Hardware: The structural sutures used to anchor the meniscus during the initial transplantation are mostly "synovialized"—meaning the body's natural lining (synovial tissue) has grown completely over them, smoothing out the surface and shielding the joint from irritation.

Because the graft appears structurally sound and well-healed, the surgeon anticipates an excellent long-term clinical outcome for the patient.
